How the work goes

CBT for teens and young adults

I work with people who are figuring out who they are, where they’re going, and how to manage everything that comes with growing up and becoming your own person. With CBT, we look closely at the thoughts and habits that keep getting in the way and work with them in a practical, grounded way.

How I use it

Katie McHugh, LCSW

With CBT, I help you notice the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions in everyday situations. We work with specific examples from your life, so the conversation stays practical and tied to what you’re actually dealing with. For some people that means looking at worry or self-criticism; for others, it’s about the habits that keep a relationship, school, or mood problem stuck.

We pay attention to the pattern in real time, not just the idea of it.

Who it tends to suit

People often come in when their thoughts keep looping and their reactions feel bigger than they want them to be. They may want to understand why they keep getting stuck, what they’re telling themselves, or why certain situations set off the same response every time. CBT can also be useful when someone wants something concrete to work with in sessions. It often helps to have a place where the problem can be slowed down and looked at clearly.

  • I get stuck in the same thought over and over.
  • I know what I should do, but I don’t do it.
  • I talk myself out of things before I even try.
  • My reactions feel bigger than the situation.

What the first sessions look like

In the first sessions, we talk about what’s happening, when it shows up, and what seems to keep the pattern going. We decide together what to focus on first, and it’s okay to come in without a plan already mapped out.

Questions people ask

What does CBT actually look like in therapy?

It usually means talking through a real situation, noticing the thoughts and reactions around it, and figuring out what keeps the loop going. We keep it connected to your day-to-day life.

Is CBT only for anxiety?

No. I use it for different kinds of patterns, including self-doubt, relationship stress, and big life changes.

Will you give me worksheets or homework?

The work can include things to think about between sessions, but we decide together what fits. It depends on what feels useful for you.

Do you use CBT with teens and young adults?

Yes. I work with teens and young adults, and CBT can be a good fit when they want something clear and practical.
